Like a hot girl who keeps a couple back-up guys at the ready, Brandon Webb is going to take his time and consider all comers before landing on a team. To that end, he’s been speaking with the Washington Nationals, and, like that aforementioned hot girl told me oh-so-many times, Webb is telling the Nats that he’s interested.
Brandon Webb “remains excited” about the Nationals, according to a baseball source. The Webb camp had talks with the Nationals during the Winter Meetings.
If the Nationals sign Webb, it most likely will be an incentive-laden deal because Webb has not pitched in almost two years. nationals.com.
It’s no surprise, as I suggested yesterday, that Webb would wait things out before settling on a team. There are too many free agent pitchers and possible trade targets out there right now, and too many teams that would be all too happy to give Webb a minuscule guarantee. Webb will be waiting to see if a team blinks (a la the A’s and Ben Sheets last year) and offers him a healthy guaranteed contract, rather than a low-base, mainly-incentive-based deal.
