Sit down and grab a paper bag.
We hear from very good baseball sources that the White Sox have made a two-year offer to free agent pitcher Kerry Wood.
Wood played 10 years with the Cubs and pitched last season for the Yankees, who reportedly are interested in bringing him back.
Wood has said he does not want to play on the South Side, so this could be interesting. chicagotribune.com.
Bear in mind that, earlier today, the White Sox signed back-end reliever Jesse Crain to a multiyear deal, so it’s possible that they’ll now cool on Wood.
Wood is rumored to be seeking a two or three year deal at $6 million per. He also would prefer the opportunity to close somewhere. Both of those qualifications, you’ll note, would preclude any realistic chance of him coming to the Cubs, no matter how wistful the idea makes us.
If, however, the reliever market continues to settle, and the number of holes out there diminish, there remains a chance that Wood would (ha, homophones) consider a reduced offer to come home to the Cubs.
