Tyler Colvin Was Great at First Base and Other Bullets – April 6, 2011

Today the Cubs go for a sweep over the Arizona Diamondbacks, which would be something: the Cubs actually putting it to a team they are supposed to beat. When was the last time you can say you saw that?

  • Carlos Pena is expected back today or Friday, but, in his stead, Tyler Colvin was pretty excellent yesterday. Not only did he have a homer and three RBI, but he also dug out a few errant throws nicely at first (including a critical 9th inning throw from Starlin Castro). Further proving that he’s a swell dude, Pena says he hopes Colvin keeps it up. Though he does does say he hopes he doesn’t get “Wally Pipped.”
  • Mike Quade is not concerned with early suggestions that he’s “over-managing.” Outside of his heavy bullpen use on Monday, I’d have to agree with him – you manage to win each game. But that won’t be enough for everyone, as some a-hole is already on Quade’s case: someone behind the Cubs’ dugout was shouting criticisms of every move Quade made on Tuesday.
  • Rick Morrissey agrees with many of you in hoping that the fans are voting with their wallets – that is to say, he hopes the dismal attendance numbers are a signal that Cubs fans are sick of losing.
  • Mark Grace discusses, among other things, his role in the replacement of Ron Santo in the Cubs’ radio booth (in short, he wasn’t in the running):
