MLB Trade Deadline Update: Another Tour Around the League

Chicago Cubs

As a part of the 24-hour Trade Deadline Blogathon, I plan to update you periodically on what’s going on around the rest of baseball, and discuss, where relevant, the impact the moves have on the Chicago Cubs.

Things are quite a bit more quiet than they were a few hours ago…

  • The Ubaldo Jiminez deal was finalized a little while ago. Cleveland gets Jiminez, and the Rockies get four prospects, a couple of them big-time, including lefty starter Alex Pomeranz, a first-round pick last year, who is presently tearing it up in AA. Because he didn’t sign until August 16 last year, he can’t be named in a trade until one year later – so the Rockies technically get three prospects and a PTBNL. So, Pomeranz will probably be doing some sitting for a couple weeks, but he’s the PTBNL. That’s quite a haul for an up-and-down starter with potential velocity issues. Then again, Jiminez is just 27, and has a pretty favorable contract.
  • The Red Sox had a deal in place for former Cub Rich Harden, but some questionable medical reports blew the deal up.
  • The Diamondbacks are working hard to get a reliever. Think they’d settle for John Grabow?
  • The Padres are still expected to deal Heath Bell and Ryan Ludwick by the deadline.
  • The Pirates picked up Derrek Lee, which was reported here separately.
