The Second Cut is the Smallest: Micah Gibbs, Dae-Eun Rhee

Chicago Cubs

Today the Chicago Cubs shuffled another couple youngsters down to Minor League camp. Catcher Micah Gibbs and pitcher Dae-Eun Rhee will head out today after getting a little taste of the big time.

Rhee, who turns 23 in a couple weeks, will probably pitch at AA Tennessee this year, which could be something of a make-or-break year for him. The Cubs have long loved the righty, but, even a couple years after Tommy John surgery, his numbers haven’t matched the hype. He was eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this year, but no team took a chance. With a decent season, that could change, and the Cubs will be forced to make a decision on his 40-man future. He looked excellent in his one inning of work yesterday, for whatever that’s worth.

Gibbs, 23, is a low-level catching prospect, whom the Cubs took in the 3rd round in 2010. He’s got a ways to go before you hear too much more about him – he was in big league came as something of a fill-in when Geovany Soto went down with his “minor” groin injury.
