Cubs’ Minor League Daily: Prospect Poll, Early Results

Have you voted in the Top Ten Positional Prospects Poll over on the Message Boards yet? If not, head on over and do so. Don’t forget that you’ll need a Message Board account, and that those accounts and your main page account are separate things. [Brett: That picture there was done by Tim at Cubby-Blue many years ago for a former feature here at BN, but it works just fine for this as well. You should go visit Cubby-Blue, because Tim is awesome.]

Thanks to Cubbie Blues, we also have some early results from the poll. Despite his strikeouts, Brett Jackson is receiving 100% of the vote, as is Javier Baez. Junior Lake is right behind them with 97%, followed by Jorge Soler (93%), Josh Vitters (90%), Albert Almora (who has not signed yet (86%)), and Matthew Szczur (83%). Those seven have separated themselves as the top group in the fan polling. There is a 20 point drop to the next group of prospects. I am not sure if that means these are the players Cubs fans have the most hope for, or if these are simply the players most Cubs fans have heard of. Regardless, that is as promising a bunch of positional prospects as we have seen in the farm system in some time.

Rounding out the top ten are Jeimer Candelario (62%), Daniel Vogelbach (52%), and Zeke DeVoss (40%).

Does that match your personal Top Ten Positional Prospects List (it definitely does not match mine)? Can’t imagine how DeVoss made the top ten when Gioskar Amaya didn’t? Think Reggie Golden is being unfairly penalized by his injury? Think Jae-Hoon Ha should be in the top five? Then head on over to the Message Boards and cast your vote. We’ll keep an eye on the results and check back in with the poll from time to time.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa out hit the RedHawks, but the RedHawks out scored Iowa 3-1.
Tennessee – This one was pretty much over in the top of the first. Tennessee lost 13-6.
Daytona – Daytona claimed first place in the division with a 14-4 blowout win.
Peoria – Three Peoria errors did not help matters as the Chiefs fell 7-3.
Boise – After losing three straight to Spokane, Boise came home and thumped that same team 12-2.
Arizona – The Arizona Cubs won in a blowout, 11-2.

Performances of the Day

  • [Iowa] Chris Volstad took the loss, but despite that he pitched well (7 IP, 6H, 2ER, 7K).
  • [Iowa] Jay Jackson pitched another perfect inning in which he struck out two.
  • [Iowa] Matt Tolbert enjoyed his best game of the season. He finished 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, and his seventh stolen base.
  • [Iowa] Adrian Cardenas returned to Iowa and promptly resumed hitting. He was 2 for 4 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base.
  • [Tennessee] This was a miserable game for Trey McNutt. He failed to escape the first inning, allowed eight runs (four earned) on six hits, walked one, and had no strikeouts.
  • [Tennessee] Michael Brenly hit his third home run as part of a 2 for 4 night. Nelson Perez also went long.
  • [Daytona] A.J. Morris pitched two scoreless innings, striking out one.
  • [Daytona] Matthew Szczur went 3 for 3 with two walks, three stolen bases (giving him 26 for the season), and three runs scored.
  • [Daytona] Arismendy Alcantara was 3 for 5 with a three run home run (number five on the year) and his twenty third stolen base. Ronald Torreyes and Rebel Ridling also hit long balls for the Cubs.
  • [Peoria] Javier Baez went 3 for 4 with a walk, two doubles, and three stolen bases.
  • [Peoria] Gerardo Concepcion had another rough first inning, but he did recover enough to make it through six innings on 87 pitches.
  • [Boise] Ian Dickson struck out six in his five inning start.
  • [Boise] Chadd Krist went 4 for 5 with two doubles. Wilson Contreras was also 4 for 5 with a double.
  • [Arizona] Carlos Martinez-Pumarino did not start the game (Hunter Ackerman did, but he left after one inning), but he did pitch five shutout innings in which he allowed just three hits and struck out five.
  • [Arizona] Jacob Rogers got the start at DH in this game, and in true DH fashion he went 4 for 4 with a double and two home runs.
  • [Arizona] Trey Martin also had big game. The center fielder finished 3 for 4 with a double.
  • Other Minor League Notes

  • Three runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings is enough to make Volstad’s game notable, but there is a little more to this one. He also posted a GO/AO of 10-2. When Volstad came to the Cubs he was often billed as a heavy ground ball pitcher. If he can get that ground ball stuff working again, it could be a big help to him should he get called back to Chicago.
  • The top of the Tennessee batting order could all be part of the Cubs’ future. Logan Watkins is a plus defensive second baseman who has broken out to the tune of a .942 OPS in June. Jae-Hoon Ha is the best defensive outfielder in the system and will soon be appearing for the World Team in the Futures Game. Junior Lake might be the most exciting prospect in the upper minors. All three have major league potential, but don’t expect to see them in Chicago in 2012.
