Cubs’ Minor League Daily: Go Pink

Deep down inside you know you that you have always wanted a blue Cubs jersey with pink trim.

Maybe you visited Daytona’s stadium one Wednesday evening and envied the blue and pink look being sported the Cubs. Maybe you spilled a bottle of ink on a baby shower invitation and thought, ‘That combination would make a great baseball uniform.’ Maybe you even have weird nightmares about pink elephants playing outfield for the Cubs and finishing the year with a higher dWAR than Tony Campana. Or maybe, though I find this one unlikely, you had never considered that such awesomeness as a blue Cubs jersey with pink trim could ever exist… until now.

Whatever is the root of your insatiable desire, today is your lucky day. For one week only, just one more week, the Daytona Cubs are auctioning off the blue and pink uniform jerseys that team has been wearing for every Wednesday home game all season. The auction is taking place online and bids start at just $75. As you probably expected, the proceeds from the auction will benefit the American Cancer Society. Not only can you finally fulfill your life long dream of owning a blue (Daytona) Cubs jersey with pink trim, you can even support a good cause in the process. You can’t get a better win-win than that.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa was able to grab a seventh inning lead, but it was short lived. They lost this one 6-3.
Tennessee – The Smokies were blown out of their own ballpark by a final of 11-1.
Daytona – The rains stopped long enough for the Cubs to play two games on Wednesday. Unfortunately, they lost the first contest 2-1 and the second one 4-2.
Peoria – Peoria scored three times in the top of the twelfth to win 9-6.
Boise – Boise and Vancouver combined for 31 total hits, but it was Boise who walked away with the 11-6 win.
Arizona – The AZL Cubs not only won both halves of a double header, they won both games in a shutout. The two finals were 3-0 and 1-0.

Performances of the Day

  • [Iowa] Horatio Ramirez ate up seven innings for the Cubs and only allowed one run in the process. The bullpen was not able to match his performance.
  • [Iowa] Dave Sappelt had the only multi-hit game (he went 2 for 4) and the only extra base hit (a triple) for the Cubs.
  • [Tennessee] Matthew Szczur hit his fourth Double A triple in this game. The Smokies’ other two hits were provided by Dustin Harrington.
  • [Tennessee] Zach Rosscup struck out the side in his one inning of work, and Harrington fanned two in a hitless ninth. Yes, Harrington is an infielder.
  • [Daytona] Eduardo Figueroa, Matthew Spencer, and A.J. Morris each pitched an inning of hitless relief in Game One. Ryan Searle tossed a hitless frame of his own in Game Two.
  • [Daytona] John Andreoli stole his 51st base of the season in Game One. If the weather stays dry, Andreoli might have enough games left this season to reach 60 steals.
  • [Daytona] The star of Game Two was Ronald Torreyes. The second baseman went 3 for 3 in the nightcap.
  • [Peoria] Sheldon McDonald pitched two of the extra innings and Luis Liria pitched the third one. Neither pitcher allowed a hit.
  • [Peoria] Timothy Saunders went 4 for 6 with a double and a stolen base to raise his Low-A batting average up to .391. His double was the only extra base hit for Peoria in the game.
  • [Peoria] Jorge Soler and Pin-Chieh Chen each singled twice for the Chiefs.
  • [Boise] Stephen Bruno, Willson Contreras, and Izaac Garsez each had three hits in this game. Garsez included both a double and a triple in his tally.
  • [Boise] Daniel Vogelbach drew two more walks; his Boise OBP now reads .429. That compares very favorably to his average of .333.
  • [Arizona] In Game One the shutout was pitched by Ryan McNeil (4 IP, 2 K), Rafael Dolis (1.1 IP, 2 K), and Jasvir Rakkar (1.2 IP, 4 K). The shutout artists in Game Two were Corbin Hoffner (3 IP, 2 K), Ben Wells (1 IP, 3 K), and Alvido Jimenez (3 IP, 3 K).
  • [Arizona] The Cubs did not exactly have a lot of offense themselves, but what they did have was Anthony Giansanti. The young outfielder doubled, walked, and drove in two of the Cubs’ three runs in Game One. He followed that up with a solo home run in Game Two to give the Cubs the only score they needed.
  • Other Minor League Notes

  • It is very difficult to imagine how Tennessee can make the playoffs after last night’s loss. The gap is too big with too few games remaining for the Smokies to have a realistic chance.
  • Albert Almora did not play in Boise’s big win.
  • Ben Wells really did pitch in Arizona last night. This is the same Ben Wells who was shut down earlier this season with planned elbow surgery. Apparently the Cubs instead decided to let him rest for a few months in the hopes that surgery would not be necessary. Maybe that plan worked.
