Enhanced Box Score: Cardinals 5, Cubs 4 – September 22, 2012, and Other Bullets

I saw ‘The Master’ yesterday (which is partly to blame for the tardiness of the below EBS), and I left it not knowing whether I liked it, whether I understood it, or whether it was any good. I love Paul Thomas Anderson, so my instinct is to assume that it was great, and I just didn’t “get” it yet. Not sure that’s what he was going for, though.

  • Carlos Marmol’s blown save yesterday was his first since April. At least it wasn’t of the three-run variety. Marmol had saved 19 straight coming into yesterday.
  • The man who did it – Carlos Beltran – had this to say about playing the Cubs: “They have nothing to lose. They’re just going to come here and play the game. Sometimes teams just get hot or cold. They’re putting together good at-bats. They’re pitching well. It’s not like we’re facing a Triple-A team. They’re in the big leagues. We just can’t take them for granted.” Thanks?
  • Anthony Rizzo comes in for some defensive love, particularly in relation to helping Darwin Barney continue his errorless streak.
  • On Matt Garza, who is recovering from a stress reaction in his elbow, Dale Sveum will say only that Garza will be ready for Spring Training.
  • Dale Sveum doesn’t necessarily buy into his bosses’ opinion that evaluating players in September (when you’re out of it) is fraught with peril.
  • And your massively tardy EBS from yesterday’s game … Carlos Marmol’s blown save was his first in months, and there may have been another first-in-a-long-time …
