The Cubs have inked a trio of players to minor league deals, according to Baseball America’s Matt Eddy: outfielder Brian Bogusevic, infielder Alberto Gonzalez, and outfielder Johermyn Chavez.
Bogusevic, 28, is the most well-known of the three, having been a quality part-timer for the Astros in 2011 before struggling mightily in a more full-time role in 2012. He’ll fight for a Joe Mather-esque bench job in Spring Training, before likely heading to AAA to serve as outfield depth.
Gonzalez, 29, is a journeyman type who most recently spent some time on the bench in Texas. Chavez, 23, is a former Blue Jays and Mariners prospect who has reached AA, but stalled it slightly.
Eddy also mentions veteran minor league catcher J.C. Boscan signing a minor league deal with the Cubs, but we discussed that one last week.
