Spring Training Miscellany: Giants 9, Cubs 3 – March 25, 2013

cactusEh. Shrug. The Cubs got whooped today. It’ll happen from time to time in the regular season, too.

  • Travis Wood had his first really crummy – really crummy – outing of the Spring, giving up seven hits and four walks in just four innings. That’ll get you knocked around, and it did today, to the tune of four earned runs.
  • Cory Wade, one of three remaining competitors for the final bullpen spot, got an extended look today, and the results were less than impressive – 2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 ER, 4 R, 2 K.
  • Shawn Camp is ready for the regular season if today’s outing is any indication: he struck out the side in his inning of work.
  • Brent Lillibridge, who can legitimately play all over, took on the toughest position for a non-catching utility man today, that being shortstop. He had two errors. He also went 0-4 with a strikeout. Everyone has rough days, even Spring Training superstars.
  • Each of Steve Clevenger and Alberto Gonzalez had a hit today, but it sounds like Dale Sveum is leaning toward keeping Clevenger as his 25th man, primarily because of the lefty thing.
  • Dioner Navarro hit his fourth homer on the Spring. Save some for the regular season, big dude.
  • There was a cool moment at the start the game, with Shawon Dunston, Jr. and his dad – now a coach with the Giants – exchanging lineup cards. The junior Dunston got a lot of playing time, too, and actually had a nice at bat in the 9th against Sergio Romo, resulting in a single. It’s very easy to forget about him as a prospect given his rough debut and the seeming glut of outfield talent in the Cubs’ system, but they didn’t give him $1 million for nothing.

Nico Hoerner’s Extremely High Hit and Two Even Higher Ones in Recent Memory

By now you've seen Nico Hoerner's jarringly-high game-winning hit from last night's game against the Diamondbacks, and I've kinda been chuckling about it all morning. I thought Sarah Langs offered some fun context for just how high that pitch was:...

NO WAY! Michael Busch Ties Cubs HR History with Yet ANOTHER Home Run

Coming into tonight's game, Michael Busch had homered in four straight contests. The streak was notable enough for all the obvious reasons, but it was especially interesting because all four long balls came with two strikes and all four came...

I won't say the Cubs luck has finally turned — not one day after they lost Seiya Suzuki to an oblique injury (while still playing without Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, and Julian Merryweather) — buuuuuuuuut that's two wins in a...

Wake Up and Watch the Cubs Win an Extra-Innings Thriller in Arizona

Although you'd always love to see more offense throughout a game, it's hard to argue with a thrilling, come-from-behind, late-innings, then-extra-innings win. That's what the Chicago Cubs pulled off last night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a great performance from...

    Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 2 – April 15, 2024

Un-be-lievable. That game went from snooze-fest to nail-biter in a HURRY. And I don't think I'm too far off base saying the Cubs got pretty lucky in that one. Not only were they able to tie the game in the...

Oh, No! Seiya Suzuki to the IL with an Oblique Injury

I hate Mondays. I hate the NL West. And I hate obliques. After losing their No. 3 starter before the season (Jameson Taillon), their ace on Opening Day (Justin Steele), and one of their best relievers a week ago (Julian...
