Oh, you crafty front office.
As speculated when they picked him up off of waivers two days ago, the Chicago Cubs held onto righty Guillermo Moscoso just long enough to be able to then place him back on waivers, and sneak him through to stash in Iowa. Moscoso, 29, is an intriguing swing man, and definitely the kind of pitcher who is nice to keep handy at AAA Iowa, should a need arise (and he’s got a little upside, too).
With Moscoso off the 40-man roster, there is now an open spot to add, for example, non-roster invitee Brent Lillibridge before Opening Day, which should be happening shortly. If the Cubs end up selecting lefty Hisanori Takahashi for the final bullpen spot, they’ll have to open up one more 40-man spot, which could be accomplished without losing a player by placing Scott Baker on the 60-day disabled list.
