Chicago Cubs

The dream of 162-0 has died. You can’t win them all. Or, in the Cubs’ case, you can score them all. I mean you can’t score at all.

Edwin Jackson started out nails – he struck out the first three batters he saw – but ran into some trouble with his command in the fourth, forcing him to throw 29 pitches in the cold, cold Pittsburgh evening air. He followed it up with a nice 5th inning, but he was at 92 pitches already, so his night was over. All in all, not a bad outing, and not the reason the Cubs lost.

The Cubs loaded ’em in the 7th against Wandy (courtesy of two HBP), and Brent Lillibridge worked a hell of a long at bat, but, le sigh, struck out looking. Alberto Gonzalez then popped out, but that’s to be expected.

In the end, the Cubs’ offensive output was downright incredible.
