Your Florida State League Player of the Week: Jorge Soler

Chicago Cubs

jorge soler cubsA little bit of good minor league news to brighten your afternoon. A few weeks after Javier Baez got the honor, Jorge Soler has now been honored as the Florida State League’s Player of the Week.

Soler, 21, had just four games in the week at issue, but he still hit two homers, a triple, and three doubles. He’s had a slump here and there, but, by and large, he’s been destroying High-A with consistency. He sports a .281/.369/.542 line in one of the most pitching-friendly leagues, and, having just turned 21 in February, he’s younger than average for the league.

Perhaps more impressively, he has nearly as many extra-base hits (14) and walks (13) as he does strikeouts (17). In short, Soler has been an absolute monster this year. It’s hard to see him sticking in High-A for much more than another couple months. The Cubs are going to want to see how he transitions to AA later this year.

In a season where we’ve seen the Cubs’ top prospects suffer early ineffectiveness, injuries, and visa problems, it’s nice to see at least one big timer performing like a big timer.
