You’re Already Halfway to Forcing Me to Blog for 30 Straight Hours at the Trade Deadline

By now, I should know to not be surprised by anything you folks do.

In less than one day, your generosity helped raise more than $3,000 for Make-A-Wish, getting halfway to the point where we can sponsor the wish of a child – and the intention is that the wish(es) we sponsor will be related to Chicago Cubs experiences. (The mechanics of pairing specific donations to specific wishes is understandably complex, so I want to make sure you know that I can’t tell you that your precise dollars will pay directly for a specific Cubs-related wish. But what matters is that I can say that every dollar we raise will go straight to Make-A-Wish to help pay for wishes – of which Make-A-Wish grants many related to the Cubs – and the intention is that our efforts help sponsor children who want a Chicago Cubs experience.)

This whole process makes me so excited, and I am overwhelmed by the support you all have already shown. That’s both your monetary support, as well as your efforts to share this fundraiser with everyone you can.

I was also very heartened to hear from the Cubs on the fundraiser yesterday, and they’ve offered their encouragement and appreciation for what you guys have done. Although they can’t be formally involved – we may not look like it, but this is still a media enterprise and there are some important boundaries there – the Cubs are definitely aware of what we’re doing, and will keep apprised of our success. (To that end, your efforts to share this fundraiser with the Cubs, directly, has been greatly appreciated – they definitely heard. You folks rock.)

But let’s not get too back-slappy just yet – there’s a long way to go if you want to see me go deep into sleep-deprived and hype-induced delirium on July 30 and 31. I’m already committing to blog for 24 hours straight leading up to the Trade Deadline on July 31, but if you donate $6,000 (the cost of sponsoring a wish), I’ll bump that up to 30 hours straight.

Since I want you to get really greedy with my time, I’m also offering that I’ll tack on an additional hour for every $1,000 thereafter that you donate. I have to cap the Blogathon at 36 hours – the furthest bounds of sanity command it – but we can definitely raise more than $12,000 total for Make-A-Wish if we get there.

Thank you for your generosity thus far, and I’m going to ask you all for a little more. Giving offers so many benefits:

(1) You help further the mission of one of the best organizations out there (Make-A-Wish);

(2) You help make Chicago Cubs wishes come true for young Cubs fans;

(3) You ensure yourself 30 to 36 hours of constant, ridiculous, over-the-top coverage here at BN for the all-important Trade Deadline; and

(4) You get to watch me slowly come unhinged around hour 20 or so, rebound for the next 10 hours, and then fall apart at the zero hour when seven independent Twitter reports claim the Cubs will definitely be making a deal with seven different teams for the same player within the next five minutes.

Sounds like a good deal to me. For you, I mean. So please consider giving what you can, and consider spreading word about the fundraiser. We can do a lot of good here, and I thank you so much for your help.
