Cubs Minor League Daily: Slow Season

javier baez aflBoth Double A and Triple A mirror the major league season so far as the All-Star break goes. That means there will be no games for Iowa or Tennessee until Thursday. Several Smokies will be featured in the Southern League All-Star Game, though, so there is that to look forward to.

Major League Baseball also frowns on announcing major transactions during the All-Star break. That does not mean the trade rumors will slow down, but the trades are likely to be put on hold until later in the week.

On the other hand, I think we can expect Kris Bryant to make his professional debut this week. That is likely to create quite a stir for Cub fans.

Scores From The Weekend

Iowa
Friday – The Cubs saw two pitchers combine for a one hitter in this 3-0 win.
Saturday – Iowa gave up two in the ninth to lose this one 9-7.
Sunday – For 17 long innings these team were deadlocked, but in the 18th the Cubs broke first. Iowa lost 5-1.

Tennessee
Friday – The Smokies played two on Friday. They won the first game 2-0 in ten innings, and also took the second, a game post poned on 6/27, by a final of 2-1.
Saturday – And on Saturday they won again in yet another shutout. The final was 5-0.
Sunday – And that’s another Tennessee rain out. Seems to be a lot of those this year.

Daytona
Friday – Rain postponed this one.
Saturday – Daytona played two on Saturday. Game One was all Cubs as they won 8-0. Game Two was more of the same and ended with a 2-0 Cubs win.
Sunday – Sunday brought another Cubs win, 6-2.

Kane County
Friday – The slumping Cougars let this one slip away. They lost 5-4.
Saturday – The Cougars led for exactly half an inning. They lost 9-1.
Sunday – Once again, Kane County fell behind early and never recovered. They lost again, 5-2.

Boise
Friday – Boise could not take advantage of outhitting Vancouver and lost 8-4.
Saturday – Despite giving up four in the ninth, the Hawks held on for the 5-4 win.
Sunday – The Hawks won again in this 3-0 shutout.

Arizona
Friday – Arizona was shut out 7-0.
Saturday – The AZL Cubs had Saturday off.
Sunday – After rallying for four in the ninth, the AZL Cubs came away 6-4 winners.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Guillermo Moscoso stuck out 5 and walked 2 in pitching 8 innings of one hit ball on Friday. Brian Schlitter completed the shutout for his 11th save.
  • [Iowa] Junior Lake finished Saturday 4 for 4 with a double and three steals, bringing him to 13 for the year. He doubled again on Sunday.
  • [Iowa] Jake Arrieta struck out 9 in 6 innings of work for the Cubs on Sunday, and allowed just one run. Brooks Raley, Eduardo Sanchez, Brian Schlitter and Marcus Hatley combined to get the game to Jeffry Antigua who remarkably held on for six scoreless frames. The All-Star break comes at a great time for the Iowa bullpen.
  • [Tennessee] The Friday shutout was a combo effort from Austin Kirk (6 IP, 4 H, 3K), Frank Batista (3 IP, 2 K), and Hunter Cervenka (1 IP).
  • [Tennessee] Saturday’s shutout was also combo effort. The pitchers involved were Kyle Hendricks (5 IP, 1 H, 4 K), Carlos Gutierrez (1.2 IP, 1 H), Tony Zych (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K), and Zach Rosscup (1 IP, 1 K).
  • [Tennessee] The non-shutout on Friday was also a well pitched game. Credit for that effort goes to Yeiper Castillo (4 IP, 6 K), Marcos Mateo (2 IP, 1 H, 2 K), and Kevin Rhoderick (3 IP, 2 K).
  • [Tennessee] Javier Baez had two hits in both Friday games and now has a four game hitting streak going. He has also homered in back to back games, giving him three in Double A and 20 for the season.
  • [Tennessee] Matt Szczur had a nice game on Saturday, finishing 3 for 5.
  • [Tennessee] John Andreoli and Christian Villanueva each had two hits on Saturday and joined Baez in homering. It was the 12th long ball for Villanueva, and Andreoli’s first this year.
  • [Daytona] Daytona’ first shutout came from new Cub Ivan Pineyro (5 IP, 5 H, 3 K) backed up by Chang-Yong Lim (1 IP, 1 K) and Dayan Diaz (1 IP, 1 K).
  • [Daytona] The Cubs second shutout was a complete game, seven inning effort from Matt Loosen. He gave up 4 hits and struck out 4.
  • [Daytona] Zeke DeVoss stole three bases on Friday and now has 23 for the season.
  • [Daytona] Catcher Chadd Krist has homered in back to back games and now has three for the High A Cubs.
  • [Kane County] Jose Rosario struck out 9 in his 6 innings of work on Friday. Unfortunately he also gave up 6 hits and 3 walks.
  • [Kane County] It looks like Gioskar Amaya is heating up again. He went 2 for 3 with a triple and a walk on Friday, reached on a walk on Saturday, and doubled as part of a 3 for 4 day on Sunday.
  • [Kane County] Dan Vogelbach also had a nice weekend. He picked up homer number fourteen on Saturday, and then went 2 for 4 on Sunday.
  • [Hawks] The Sunday shutout came from Rob Zastryzny (2 IP, 2 H, 2 K), Sam Wilson (2 IP, 2 H, 3 K), Zack Godley (2 IP, 3 H, 1 K), Scott Frazier (2 IP, 1 H, 1 K), and Matt Iannazzo (1 IP, 2 K).
  • [Hawks] Jordan Hankins had a very nice weekend. He finished with 7 hits over the three days, including two doubles. He spent one game at third base and the other two at second.
  • [Hawks] Shawon Dunston doubled twice in a three hit Friday. His OPS is now a tidy .802.
  • [Arizona] Starling Peralta struck out three in three innings of relief on Friday.
  • [Arizona] Michael Wagner struck out two more in one inning of work and kept his Arizona ERA at 0.00. Trevor Lang and Tyler Ihrig matched him.
  • [Arizona] Kelvin Freeman and Xavier Batista finished with three hits on Sunday. Carlos Penalver had two hits.
  • [Arizona] Batista and Erick Castillo both hit their first home run of the season in the ninth inning.
  • Other News

  • Yesterday the long and long awaited reranking of the Bleacher Nation Top 40 was published. If you’re in need some of prospecty goodness this Monday morning and missed out on the article on Sunday, now is your chance to get caught up. There is more pitching on the list than you might expect, and this time we even have a catcher sighting (sort of)!
  • Marcos Mateo‘s Tennessee appearance is part of his comeback trail. He should be a factor in the spring training bullpen battles next March.
  • Fan of the site and baseball photographer Dylan Heuer was at the Iowa game… part of it anyway… on Sunday and brought back another collection of great images. That first picture, the one of catcher Chad Noble, might be one of the strangest facial expressions I’ve seen in any of Dylan’s photographs this year.
