Kris Bryant is Headed to Boise and Other Bullets

Kris BryantAlthough the trade and rumor activity has obviously been nuts over the past few days, I’ll still do my best to give you a good show on the 30th and 31st at the Deadline. I’m sure there will still be plenty to cover for the BN Blogathon those days, even if a few of the big chips have already been moved. We’re still shooting for our goal of $12,000 donated to Make-A-Wish and 36 hours of blogging at the Deadline. Check out how you can help get us there.

  • After just a couple games with the rookie ball team, top 2013 draft pick Kris Bryant is headed up to short season low-A Boise, per Sahadev Sharma. Bryant is likely to play for a least a little at Boise while as he gets back into baseball shape. From there, I could see him reaching High-A Daytona by the end of the minor league season (which comes at the end of August/beginning of September). Kane County would be a fit, but, as Sahadev wisely points out, they’ve currently got Jeimer Candelario manning third base, and, at 19, he’s not really in line for a promotion.
  • His swan song with the AZL Cubs was a wrist-flicking double captured by BN’er Eric Pauly. That’s some easy power:
  • A random note on the Matt Garza trade: since no cash was involved, the Cubs will save about $4.15 million by sending Garza’s contract to the Rangers. Money is money, yo.
  • As part of the acquisition of pitching prospect C.J. Edwards in the Garza deal yesterday, the Cubs are sending him to Daytona – which is a promotion to High-A. Edwards, 21, had been absolutely destroying low-A.
  • Will Junior Lake stay with the Cubs once David DeJesus returns? Although it’s been just four games, he’s certainly making it tough to say, yeah, he’ll be demoted. If Alfonso Soriano is dealt before DeJesus returns, then obviously Lake will have a spot to stay. Even if not, Dale Sveum told the media he’d be “pretty stupid to say” that Lake won’t stay at this point. If no one is traded this week, and DeJesus returns, I’d have to guess that Lake will become a sub until after the Deadline (when, presumably, at least one of the three primary outfielders – Soriano, DeJesus, Schierholtz – will be traded).
  • Everyone, including the opponent, was impressed by Chris Rusin’s performance last night. I’d say he earned himself another start as the current replacement for Matt Garza.
  • The Cubs react to the Ryan Braun suspension.
  • Appropriately, 10 years ago today, the Cubs traded for Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton. Won’t it be fun when the Cubs are making those kinds of trades again?
  • In case you missed anything in the feverish pace of yesterday and this morning: here’s how the Matt Garza trade developed, here’s the official announcement of the deal (and how the PTBNL structure works), here’s an analysis of the roster implications, here’s the developing Alfonso Soriano trade rumorhere’s a look at how trading for Soriano could be financial advantageous to the Yankees, and here’s a report on the Dodgers being out on Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Also, Ryan Braun felt the fist of justice.
