BN Trade Deadline Blogathon: Hour 27

lou piniella sleepingI am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 36 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, thanks to your generous donations to Make-A-Wish. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

If you’d asked me before this all started when I thought the busiest stretch of the Blogathon would be, I would have said the last hour, naturally. But if you then said, “well, I mean, yeah, but I was looking for a slightly richer response than the obvious,” I would have said, hey, take it easy. And then I would have said there are probably two busiest stretches: one from about 8pm to 11pm on the 30th, and then the late morning straight through to the Deadline on the 31st. That first one was pretty busy last night (the three-team Jake Peavy trade went down, several Cubs bits floated), and I expect we’ll roll into that second stretch any hour now.

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

The Cubs might be done listening to Jeff Samardzija offers. Plus your usual Minor League Daily and Bullets.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

Probably that Jon Heyman Samardzija piece, in which he suggests that the Cubs’ plan with Samardzija will be to try and extend him this offseason, and trade him if he doesn’t bite.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

I suspect some things will shake out in this regard before the next update.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

Finished my OJ and I’m on to a chai latte.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

It’s not so much “strange” as it is … sweet? I miss my family a little bit. The Wife graciously took The Kids to The Grandparents’ house on Monday so that I could sleep well in advance of this here thingy, and also be relatively distraction-free during this here thingy. I’m appreciative that she did it, but I still miss them. And since I’ve been awake for the equivalent of two waking-days’ worth of time, it feels like they’ve been gone even longer.

Among the remaining POSSIBLE things the Chicago Cubs could do this offseason, signing closer Tanner Scott would probably be just about the best. He not only fits an obvious need and dramatically improves an entire group on the roster, but...

WATCH: Sammy is BACK and He Brought His Flag!

Roki Sasaki Makes the Totally Surprising and Shocking Decision to Sign with the Dodgers

Two Free-Agent Relievers Off the Board: Jose Leclerc to the A’s, A.J. Minter to the Mets

More Confirmation on the Cubs Free Agent Plans the Rest of the Way

Jed Hoyer Confirms That the Cubs Regretted Non-Tendering Kyle Schwarber

One thing that most of us have suspected is that the Chicago Cubs' decision to non-tender Kyle Schwarber was (1) entirely motivated by an extreme need to cut costs after the "biblical losses" of the pandemic year, and (2) something...

CubsCon Arrives, IFA Signings, Sammy, Fan Strays, Second Basemen, and Other Cubs Bullets
