Lukewarm Stove: Kennedy, Molina, Thatcher, Braves, Rangers, Pirates, More

stoveStill relatively quiet. There was a definite uptick this morning, but not a lot from the Cubs’ side of things …

  • The Diamondbacks are still shopping Ian Kennedy, per Jon Heyman, despite missing out on Jake Peavy last night. Although Buster Olney had connected the Cubs to Kennedy yesterday, Heyman mentions only the Padres and Angels. As a buy low opportunity, Kennedy made great sense for the Cubs (though more likely in the offseason). But if teams are, like, bidding for him … eh. Some of the shine wears off.
  • Yadier Molina is going on the disabled list with a knee sprain, but if you thought the Cardinals might get desperate to pick up a catcher (Dioner Navarro, perhaps?), Ken Rosenthal says it isn’t happening. According to the Cardinals, anyway.
  • If the Cubs are shopping James Russell, they could have a lefty reliever competitor in the form of Padres reliever Joe Thatcher. Consistently very good, and absurdly so this year, Thatcher is 31, makes just $1.35 million this year, and has one more year of arbitration after this season. He’s probably a more attractive overall target, and the Padres might move him, says Jayson Stark.
  • The Braves are still looking for a backup infielder (Cody Ransom?), per Mark Bowman, but they may wait until August to address the hole in the waiver period.
  • Jayson Stark says the Rangers and Pirates – who very much need to add an outfielder – have only lukewarm interest in Alex Rios. The Cubs, as we’ve discussed, have Nate Schierholtz and David DeJesus to offer in the right deal.
  • If you’re hoping for a blockbuster involving Cliff Lee – to any team, not the Cubs – Jim Bowden says it isn’t happening.
