MLB.com’s Jim Callis, who recently re-ranked and wrote up the top 25 prospects in the Chicago Cubs’ system, took over the MLBPipeline Twitter feed for a Cubs prospect chat yesterday. Callis shared some interesting thoughts, collected here for those of you who missed it or who don’t do the Twitter thing:
Kyle Hendricks proved self at higher levels. @BG2383: which @Cubs prospect improved his stock the most between the 2013 season and today?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Still think Baez at 3B, AA at 2B in long run. @Jaypers413: With Baez now learning to play 2B, what does this mean for Alcantara? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Following up on Baez question, @Cubs trying to enhance versatility by giving him time at 2B. Makes sense, doesn't necessarily change things.
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
I'd go Alcantara 2B, Castro SS, Baez 3B, Bryant RF, trade the rest. @MalmbergKJ: How @Cubs deal with a wealth of IF prospects.
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
No big deal. 2015 ETA anyway. @voidhelix: surprised Jorge Soler hasn`t had more ST AB`s? Seems like a wasted oppo for extended look @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Can be adequate 1B maybe. Better athlete but not good athlete. @Webber_Brent: Vogelbach as a future DH even though he dropped 30lbs? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Edwards one of most electric arms in minors. Scouts outside org not as high on Soler as once were. @Crewsett: Edwards over Soler? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Could see him handling it but @Cubs don't have much reason to do that. @Youth_Movement: Is mlb debut this year reasonable for K Bryant?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Draft rd doesn't lock in prospect status. @Webber_Brent: what's up with Rob Z not being in the top 20 and guys chosen after him are? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
More on Rob Zastryzny … like him as a LHSP, just went for guys with more ceiling at end of Top 20. Wound up at No. 22 in my @Cubs rankings
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Rob Z b/c more polished. Skulina higher ceiling. @Crewsett: Which of Tyler Skulina and Rob Zastryzny climbs up the system faster? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Not that, just has lot to prove after 2013. So far, so good. @nickdevlin: Not an Olt fan? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Sure. Chance to be special. Younger version of Soler. @BrandonFitz_3: @Cubs Eloy Jimenez what is his eventual prospect status? Top 50?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Baez. Similar bat, more def value. @BrennenMac: @Cubs If you had to start a franchise and choose between Baez or Bryant, which would it be?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
RP, has SP stuff but smaller guy w/effort in delivery. @Crewsett: Corey Black – SP or RP? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Probably. AZL most likely. Only 17! @TheCubsWord: What's the highest level Eloy Jimenez will reach this year? Is Boise a stretch? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Intriguing. No. 3 SP down road? @tweetsalamander: Tseng lot of good reviews this weekend. What do you see for him this year /future @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Don't see enough FB command or sharp enough SL for that, more 7th-8th inning guy. @ThornStar17: @Cubs Is Zych still a closer in the future?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Baez, Alcantara, Vizcaino, Villanueva, Ramirez, Olt, Hendricks. @BullMediaInc: Who of the top 20 makes it to the Majors this year? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
See what Olt does this year. Soler on OF corner. @mike5_5_5: Trade Olt or bench option? And where would Soler fit? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Sure. Needs a lot of refinement but great arm. @MPeezanelly: is there any optimism for Underwood? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Should come up this year. No. 4 or 5 SP for me. @GarrettFilson: Kyle Hendricks … More of #2 starter or back-of-the-rotation? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Don't think @Cubs would sell low. @TheReal_Ankur: If Castro disappoints again in '14, how likely are @Cubs to deal him and move Baez to SS?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Has some pop, don't see him as big lg regular. @RavenNation21: What's your opinion on Rock Shoulders? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Yes. @Cubs would love for him to seize 3B job. Could maybe play OF if logjam dictates. @AndyMSchneider: Do you see Olt making MLB roster?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Frontline SP. Electric already. Only ? is durability. @BornOnThirdCubs: CJ Edwards, your expectations? Depends on filling out or no? @Cubs
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
Yes. Could be great deal for Chicago w/Edwards, Olt, Ramirez, Grimm. @TheReal_Ankur: Did @Cubs get enough value in return for Matt Garza?
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 18, 2014
PJ is frontline guy. @paulchang: Behind CJ Edwards, any high-end pitching prospects? Pierce Johnson seems like a back-of-rotation guy. @Cubs
