What You Missed This Weekend: Baez Hurt and Cut and OK, Rumors, Roster Questions, More

javier baez aflAs far as March weekends go, this was about as busy as it gets. For those of you who check out during the weekend and, pfft, live a life, here’s a look back at the busy doings around here from the last few days …

  • Late on Friday, Javier Baez terrified everyone by being pulled early in a game against the White Sox. Turns out, it was just a heel bruise and a precautionary removal.
  • The next day, though, Baez was cut from big league camp, together with Blake Parker and a few others. Baez not making the big team was obviously long expected, though the Parker news was a modest surprise. Neil Ramirez (optioned) and Tsuyoshi Wada (released) also made their way off of the Spring roster over the course of the weekend.
  • The Tigers, long connected to the Cubs because of their needs at shortstop and in the outfield, traded for a shortstop, likely killing those Darwin Barney rumors. But the Nate Schierholtz rumors will persist for a bit.
  • Sahadev and I dug into some of the Spring storylines, and where they stand, in the latest episode of the BN Podcast.
  • The Tigers took the unexpected – and almost unprecedented – step of publicly announcing that Max Scherzer had rejected their most recent contract extension offer, and, for that reason, no deal would be reached before Scherzer reaches free agency after this season. The Cubs may or may not be in his market come November, but it’s good to have him out there as an option.
  • The Cubs named Travis Wood their Opening Day starter … well, for the home opener against the Phillies on April 4.
  • I pondered what’s going to happen with Luis Valbuena if Mike Olt makes the club, and if Darwin Barney is still on the roster. Rotate him around, right? Well, that’d be a lot easier if that wasn’t already the plan for Emilio Bonifacio.
  • I was on ESPN Radio yesterday to discuss my lengthy financial piece on the Cubs, and although I can’t seem to find a replay of the interview (just rest assured, I sounded like a golden-piped Adonis with an MBA from Harvard), it does afford me the opportunity to remind those of you who haven’t yet read up on the syncing of the baseball and business plans, you should do so now. In all seriousness, I say that not out of ego – there’s just a great deal of really important stuff in there that informs the way I think folks should be perceiving the Cubs’ current rebuild.
  • And lastly, the Cubs went homer crazy yesterday against the A’s. Junior Lake, alone, had three homers.
