Got an Award? No You Don’t, Because Kris Bryant Just Took It

Chicago Cubs

kris bryant tennesseeYesterday, June 2, Chicago Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant went 2-4 with a walk, and his OPS dropped.

That pretty much sums up how absurdly good his first two months at AA have been. If that weren’t enough, however, Bryant can hang his hat on the ever-growing pile of awards he’s received.

Setting aside the weekly awards he got last year, and even setting aside the bigger awards like the Golden Spikes and the Arizona Fall League MVP (ah, did you forget how much he dominated that league, too?), there are still plenty of recent accolades lying around:

  • Bryant was just named the Southern League’s hitter of the week (for the second time).
  • Bryant was just named MLB Pipeline’s hitter of the week.
  • Bryant was also just named MLB Pipeline’s hitter of the month for May.
  • It’s not technically an award, but Bryant was discussed adoringly in the latest Minor League Roundup at Baseball America (note the interesting side discussion about how the Cubs will deal with legit prospect Christian Villanueva, who is currently manning third base at Iowa).
  • And soon, when the Cubs announced their player and pitcher of the month for May, I think it’s a pretty fair guess that Bryant’s going to take that one home, too.
  • He’ll also be a first half All-Star in the Southern League.
  • Within a couple weeks, I’d guess, he’ll likely get the best award of all (so far): a promotion to AAA. Then he can start racking up a whole new set of awards.
