The Dominican Summer League has had about ten games to generate some early stats, and even though sample sizes are going to be meaninglessly small we may as well take a look at the DSL Cubs and see what stories are emerging.
One stat that instantly stands out is the line put up by right handed pitcher Oscar De La Cruz. Through eleven innings over two starts this 6’4″ teenager has struck out twelve, allowed four hits, and walked just two. He also sports a nice high GO/AO of 1.88. He is in his second season in the league and has already matched last year’s totals for innings and strikeouts.
Shortstop Miguel Ruiz, a switch-hitting teenager in his first year in the league, also quickly catches the eye. Through six games he is sitting on a SLG of .500 and an OBP of .440. Again, sample sizes render these numbers useless for drawing conclusions, but they do flag Ruiz as a player to watch. A switch-hitting infielder who is already slugging .500 (if he can keep it up) is a player to watch.
Jenner Emeterio is in his third summer in the league, but his five steals in five games (not to mention his seven walks and .417 OBP) also catch the eye. Age is an issue here given that good prospects have usually moved up from the DSL by the time they turn 20, but Emeterio’s high OBP and walk rate are worth keeping tabs on for a while yet.
[Tennessee] Eduardo Figueroa pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3.
[Tennessee] Tony Zych (in 2 innings) and Armando Rivero (in one inning) struck out a pair each in relief.
[Kane County] Jacob Hannemann walked and scored in the first game, then doubled and finished 2 for 4 in the second one. In the process he also stole his 19th base on the season.
[Kane County] Jordan Hankins doubled in the first one, then finished 2 for 3 in the second. Carlos Penalver and Ben Carhart also finished the second game with two hits.
[Kane County] Tyler Skulina, the Game One starter, pitched a nice game. Over 5 innings he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Michael Wagner allowed a hit and struck out two in his inning on the mound.
[Kane County] In Game Two Daury Torrez allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 2. Tyler Bremer picked up the save by striking out the side.

Yesterday I linked to the charity auction of a baseball signed by the 2013 Daytona Cubs. At the time the high bid on that ball was ten bucks. Twenty four hours later that high bid has gone up ten fold and as of this writing sits at $105. I’m not sure if that’s a reflection of the size of the Bleacher Nation community, the magnetic draw of Kris Bryant and his #sparkle, or just a coincidence. Given that there have only been five bidders so far it is probably just coincidence. Probably…
