The MLB Futures Game, played during All-Star weekend, is kind of like an All-Star Game for upper level prospects. Well, I guess it’s not “kind of like” that, it is that. Each organization can basically have upwards of two players in the game, which is played between a U.S. roster and a World roster. Last year, the Cubs placed two players on the World Team, AA Tennessee infielder (now AAA Iowa versatile player) Arismendy Alcantara and High-A Daytona outfielder (now rehabbing AA Tennessee outfielder) Jorge Soler.
This year – surprise! – Kris Bryant gets the nod for the U.S. Roster. It’s another feather in Bryant’s increasingly festooned cap, and here’s hoping he’s able to step away from hitting everything he sees at AAA for a homer and do the same at the Futures Game.
Almost just as unsurprisingly, Javier Baez gets the nod for the World Roster. Although he’s had some well-publicized struggles this year, Baez is still a top ten prospect in the game, coming off a huge year in 2013, and doing some good things at shortstop as the youngest player at AAA.
The Futures Game is on Sunday, July 13, at 4pm CT. It’ll be televised on MLB Network and streamed on MLB.com. So get yourself ready. And, to the batting practice pitcher at the game: may God have mercy on your soul.
