Fun With Anthony Rizzo’s Big Night/Week (VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

When you hit five homers in the span of less than a week, not only are you possibly going to take sole possession of the NL lead in homers, but also your numbers are going to go through the roof.

So it has been for Anthony Rizzo, whose 25 homers make me giddy, the most recent two of which you can watch here:

The extent to which the second one was wind-aided and fell into the basket in the relatively shallow power alley is more than compensated for by the first one, which was a monster shot.

Heading into the All-Star break, Rizzo was hitting .275/.381/.499 with a .382 wOBA and a 142 wRC+. These are awesome numbers, and they came in 407 plate appearances – meaning that it’s hard to move the needle at that point with a good game or two.

But four games later, Rizzo is hitting .283/.385/.539 with a .398 wOBA and a 154 wRC+. Just four games, and his OPS climbed 44 points, his wOBA climbed 17 points, and his wRC+ climbed 12 points. That’s nutty.

Rizzo now has the 9th best wOBA in all of baseball, and the 11th best wRC+.

As excited as we are about the Cubs’ top prospects and the amazing things they are doing in the minors, Anthony Rizzo – at age 24 – is doing even more amazing things in the Major Leagues.
