A couple of minor deals went down today:
I offer these to you only because they are big league trades within the realm of “stuff that’s happening in advance of the trade deadline.” Neither deal is likely to impact the Cubs much, as they don’t have a bat to offer like Morales (and he’s really, really scuffling anyway), and Capuano has bounced around in the minors this year (albeit pitching well there).
The Yankees picking up a pitcher matters, as they might be one of the few teams desperate enough for pitching to take on Edwin Jackson, but Capuano doesn’t seem likely to preclude the Yankees from doing anything else that makes sense (in other words, if the Yankees want a couple years of Edwin Jackson, Capuano isn’t going to stop that). The only piece the Cubs might’ve shopped to the Yankees that might now be blocked by Capuano would be Tsuyoshi Wada, give the similarities there. But the return you might see on a Wada deal is sufficiently small that it’s not really something to be too concerned about. After all, the Rockies – Capuano’s third team this year – are giving up Capuano for cash.
Trades are happening, folks. They just aren’t very sexy yet.
