Good News: C.J. Edwards is Indeed Headed Back to AA Tennessee

Chicago Cubs

cj edwards daytona cubsThe young pitcher had suggested it himself, but now the Chicago Cubs have confirmed: C.J. Edwards is finally headed back to AA Tennessee.

It’s been a long three months for the Cubs’ top pitching prospect (or is he?), who went down in late April with shoulder soreness. The good news was that there was no structural damage. The bad news is that Edwards made just four starts at AA before going down.

Thankfully, if he starts for the Smokies in the next few days, he could get in another five or six starts before the end of the season. It will still be a limited year, but, if he makes up some innings in the Fall, he won’t have lost too much development time. Edwards wasn’t going to appear in the big leagues this year, anyway, so nothing changes in that regard. A midseason call-up in 2015 is possible, depending on how the Cubs want to steer Edwards’ usage/development, and depending on how the rotation and bullpen shake out.

Edwards reportedly looked good in his two Arizona outings, so hopefully that means he’s 100% healthy and ready to go full speed down the stretch and into the Fall.

Edwards returns to a 2.61 ERA in 20.2 innings at AA, with 20 Ks and 8 BBs.
