On the surface, the Cubs won a nice game last night (well, this morning). Their two runs came on one of the best two-batter sequences of the year, with Javier Baez drawing a tough, eight-pitch walk, and then Anthony Rizzo hitting a monster homer. Tsuyoshi Wada threw five scoreless innings, allowing six hits but no walks, and striking out three.
Good game all around.
But no one will think of it that way. There was a tarp malfunction during a brief, 10-minute rain shower, and then a 4 hour, 34 minute rain delay due to jacked up field conditions. Eventually, the game had to be called, despite the grounds crew’s best efforts.
The Giants are going to be pissed.
