The Giants Win Their Protest and Other Bullets

new york san francisco giants logoSocial Media Night is tonight at Wrigley Field, which includes a meet-up and STL panel at 5:30 before tonight’s game at the Captain Morgan Club. I’m looking forward to that, but it could be a little tricky because …

  • At 4:05pm today, the Cubs and Giants will resume their game from Tuesday night. That is because, yes, the Giants did win their protest of the otherwise called game – the first upheld protest in 28 years. It probably didn’t hurt the Giants’ cause that the Cubs were supportive of the protest, and MLB stretched to fit what happened into the “mechanical failure” exception for called games. Long story short, the game will resume this afternoon in the bottom of the 5th inning with the Cubs up 2-0. If you’ve got tickets for today’s game – or for the suspended game on Tuesday – you can come to the 4:05 resumed game.
  • Edwin Jackson struggled again last night, and it feels like only a matter of time before he’s shifted to the bullpen either to get a breather or to legitimately transition into a reliever role. Jackson, himself, seems resigned to what may happen (Tribune), and Jacob Turner will “start” today’s resumed game. Could that turn into Turner taking Jackson’s spot in the rotation? It’s conceivable.
  • Speaking of the rotation, Felix Doubront will make his Cubs debut as a part of the August 30 doubleheader against the Cardinals (Patrick Mooney) after one more rehab start, this time at AA Tennessee. Whether Doubront sticks in the Cubs’ rotation thereafter remains to be seen, but that’s the tentative expectation.
  • Starlin Castro was scratched from last night’s game with a family emergency, and, according to reports out of the Dominican Republic, it sounds like there was an accident, and death, involving Castro’s friends and family. He will be placed on the bereavement list, and will miss time as he deals with what I can only imagine is a very difficult time. Best wishes for Castro and his family. The Cubs could bring up someone like Logan Watkins to fill in while Castro is out, and Javier Baez will start at shortstop.
  • Joe Gardner is no longer in the Cubs’ organization, apparently.
