So, it looks like it was indeed going to be Justin Ruggiano going to the disabled list to accommodate the Jorge Soler call-up. Unfortunately for the Cubs, and for Ryan Sweeney, Ruggiano isn’t the only guy going to the DL.
Ruggiano has been dealing with an ankle issue, so he heads to the 15-day disabled list, back-dated to August 23. Sweeney, too, heads to the DL after injuring his hamstring last night. (Mooney, Rogers) Sweeney dealt with a lengthy hamstring injury earlier this year. Ruggiano did, too, as well as this ankle thing.
The moves open up the roster and outfield spot for Jorge Soler, but the Cubs also had to call up Logan Watkins to pitch in. Watkins was actually just sent down earlier this week when Starlin Castro returned from the bereavement list.
[Before anyone asks, Soler’s call-up is indeed technically called a “recall,” because he was optioned to the minors before the start of the regular season. That’s what happens to guys on the 40-man roster who don’t make the big league team.]
