Congrats to Jake Arrieta, who received some recognition for his breakout year with the Chicago Cubs, finishing tied for 9th in this year’s NL Cy Young voting. Arrieta received three fifth place votes (Zach Buchanan, Kevin Cooney, and John Fay), and finished behind Clayton Kershaw (duh), Johnny Cueto, Adam Wainwright, Madison Bumgarner, Jordan Zimmermann, Cole Hamels, Zack Greinke, and Doug Fister.
I’m going to use this as a moment to celebrate Arrieta’s incredible year, rather than a moment to comment that he probably should have finished a few spots higher (Arrieta was behind only Kershaw and Zimmermann in WAR, and behind only Kershaw in FIP).
It’s great to see some recognition for Arrieta, and I look forward to the follow-up in 2015.
Over on the AL side, by the way, Corey Kluber got the deserving nod over Felix Hernandez. Phil Hughes, in 7th, kind of got jobbed.
