The Chicago Cubs recently confirmed a number of minor league signings, the most notable of which is outfielder Adron Chambers.
You may remember Chambers, 28, from his time in the Cardinals’ organization, which featured a few short visits to the big leagues in 2011-13. As an outfielder who can play all over, Chambers moved through the Cardinals’ organization steadily after he showed a quality bat, reaching the big leagues in his fourth full professional season. After 2013, however, the Cardinals let him go, and Chambers signed a minor league deal with the Astros, who subsequently traded him to the Blue Jays.
Over a little more than 2900 minor league plate appearances, Chambers has hit .277/.364/.394. Over his brief stops in the bigs (99 PA total), he hit just .216/.289/.295. Chambers bats lefty, takes walks, has a little speed, and can play anywhere in the outfield. He’ll be AAA depth for the Cubs.
Among the team’s other minor league signings: righties Fernando Cruz and Jesus Camargo, and second baseman Carlos Sepulveda. Each of Camargo, 19, and Sepulveda, 18, is an IFA-type signing, meaning that they received some kind of signing bonus (less than $250,000, which is the max the Cubs can spend on any one IFA right now), and will head to the low levels of the minors to open next season. Cruz is 24, and was in the Royals system for a number of years as a positional player before he was converted to the mound. I’m not sure where he played the last couple years, though.
