Holiday Weekend Catch-Up: Mets Pitchers, Rooftops Suit, Hamels, Prospecting, More

bn baseball featureIn case you took a long, holiday weekend, yesterday was a pretty normal day around here, so you may have missed a bit. Let’s catch up, and rewind to Friday.

Friday, February 13

  • It was a year ago, as of Friday, that the Cubs revealed that a tight shoulder was doing to delay Jake Arrieta’s debut in 2014. How far did things come, eh?
  • The rooftops that are suing the Cubs are now also looking for a temporary restraining order against construction of the outfield signage.
  • A variety of Lukewarm Stove bits popped up late in the week.
  • Remember Gonzalez Germen? If not, I don’t blame you. The righty has bounced around a lot this offseason, and the Cubs DFA’d him almost immediately after claiming him on waivers – but they were able to get him through waivers and outright him to AAA Iowa.
  • A biggy: MLB is considering shrinking the strike zone.
  • Saturday, February 14

  • Very sad: there’s a dispute about what will happen to the remains of Ernie Banks.
  • The Mets, who’ve long efforted to move a starting arm or two, are reportedly no longer looking to deal a pitcher, presumably not having liked what they found out there. That could impact the Cubs’ market for dealing a back-end arm of their own, and/or it could signal a rough market.
  • Sunday, February 15

  • The first over/under on the Cubs in 2015 came out at 81.5 wins. You’d take the over, right?
  • Luke wrote about one of the Cubs’ most interesting, and maybe least discussed, outfield prospects: Bijan Rademacher.
  • Monday, February 16

  • We know that baseball is getting tougher and tougher for hitters, but is it becoming disproportionately tougher for young hitters? That would present an obvious problem for the Cubs.
  • BP tabs the Cubs as the top farm system in baseball, natch.
  • The latest from the Cole Hamels rumor mill, with the Cubs reportedly drawing a line in the sand.
  • The Cubs signed a handful of youngsters from Venezuela, as well as long-time farmhand Jonathan Mota. Info on those signings, and an IFA update on the Cubs.
  • Some of the latest interesting/important/funny news and articles from around baseball.
