The Chicago Cubs have announced some of the ways in which they will honor the memory of Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, who passed away last month at the age of 83.
Cubs players will wear a number 14 patch this season to memorialize the Cubs legend, and will wear number 14 hats for their opening games on March 5 in the Cactus League (it’s a split squad day). On Opening Day, MLB will honor banks before the Cubs and Cardinals’ game on ESPN2 (hopefully that tribute will be televised, too), and fans will receive commemorative pins at the game.
There will be additional tributes to Banks throughout the season, and those are being finalized.
“There is no level of recognition that can properly acknowledge how much Ernie Banks meant to this franchise and fan base,” said Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts in a statement. “Collectively, we must ensure Mr. Cub’s legacy rightfully lives on at the Friendly Confines and with future generations of baseball fans.”
