Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs 7, Angels 6 (“B” Game) – March 19, 2015

Chicago Cubs

arizona cactusThe Cubs are so hot right now that they even win fake fake games!

Today, the Cubs took on the Angels in a “B” game at Sloan Park, which means, among other things, it wasn’t an actual Cactus League game, and the rules were slightly flexible. For example, there was a half inning featuring two outs. There was, at one point, a Cubs DH and a Cubs pitcher hitting. Miguel Montero took an at bat after he’d already been removed from the game.

So, yeah. Flexible. But the Cubs won, so we’ll kinda sorta count it. There’s also no box score or video or audio from this one, so I’m just going by what folks were sharing on the interwebz from the game.

  • Kyle Hendricks started for the Cubs, and, in addition to notching a double of his own, he went five innings, allowing five hits (including a two-run homer), walked none, and struck out seven. It sounds like he was very good, and the homer was the only damage he let up. He’s rounding out an excellent Spring.
  • Speaking of excellent Springs, Albert Almora had a homer and another diving catch in center field today. Kill it this year, Albert.
  • And speaking of speaking of excellent Springs, you already know what Kris Bryant did as the DH in this one.
  • Daniel Bard finally got into a game as he comes back from a couple years of wildness problems and thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. Unfortunately, it sounds like the problems he has faced were the same – in five batters faced, he walked two, hit one, and gave up a hit. He also had two wild pitches and threw away a pickoff attempt. You just feel for the guy.
  • Tommy La Stella had at least one double and one diving play at second base, as near as I can tell.
  • Arismendy Alcantara had a triple, and he’s been driving the ball well lately.
