Good luck trying to sleep, friends.
Breaking. Source: Kris Bryant to be called up by Cubs on Friday. Story coming at http://t.co/iRRtXbR1Vj
— Jesse Rogers (@ESPNChiCubs) April 17, 2015
I’ll wait until there’s a little more in the way of confirmation before I squeal like a small child, but I’m pretty sure there’s no way Rogers would go with that unless he had an impeccable source. This is just too big.
So, get ready for Kris Bryant Day. Much more on this over the next 24 hours, because obviously.
UPDATE: Bruce Miles and Patrick Mooney confirm Rogers’ report, and add more detail:
Mike Olt to go on DL with hairline fracture of ulna. Will be in cast 3 weeks. Bryant coming up for Friday. #Cubs

MRI showed #Cubs 3B Mike Olt has hairline fracture of right wrist. Source says Kris Bryant's getting called up from Iowa for Friday's game.

That really stinks for Olt, who thought he’d miss the worst of that pitch to the wrist. I wrote earlier today that the only way I could see Bryant coming up on Friday was if Olt had to go on the disabled list, and, well, there you go. The Cubs could have futz around with some other fill-in for a few days, but the bench was already short even with Olt on it. So, knowing that within a few days they’re going to need to add at least two bats, it makes sense to just go ahead and Bryant, since he can slide right in at third. I say it all that way because this really isn’t entirely about Friday being the first day Bryant can come up with the Cubs still getting the extra year of control.
I wonder what other moves the Cubs might make tomorrow, in terms of the roster, since we expect that Neil Ramirez will also go on the DL. Perhaps Chris Denorfia (hamstring) will be back soon? Another reliever?
