Cubs Minor League Daily: Lots of Rain

cat rainSunday was nearly a wash for the Cubs organization as two games were outright rained out and one was rain shortened. Across four scheduled games we only saw about fourteen innings actually take place.

Fortunately we also have games from Friday and Saturday to talk about, so there is plenty of baseball to keep us occupied on this probably-soggy Monday morning.

Scores From Friday

Iowa – Iowa never led as they lost their home opener 3-2.
Tennessee – The Smokies opened a double header with a 1-0 win, but the dropped the second game 4-1.
Myrtle Beach – Three early runs held up in this 3-2 road win.
South Bend – The Cubs just kept scoring on their way to this 11-3 win.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Tsuyoshi Wada struck out 6 and gave a run on 4 hits and 2 walks over 4.2 innings.
  • [Iowa] Drake Britton (2 IP, 2 K) and Blake Cooper (1 IP, 1 H) both pitched well in relief.
  • [Iowa] Mike Baxter‘s double was the only extra base hit in this game.
  • [Iowa] John Andreoli singled, walked, stole a base, and scored both of the Cubs runs. Both runs were driven in by Chris Valaika.
  • [Tennessee] Ivan Pineyro held Pensacola to just 2 hits while striking out 3 in Game One. Hunter Cervenka walked one in an otherwise flawless inning to finish it.
  • [Tennessee] Dan Vogelbach finished Game One 2 for 3. Kyle Schwarber was 0 for 1 with a pair of walks and the lone run.
  • [Tennessee] In Game Two, Vogelbach went 3 for 3 to account for half the Smokies’ offense.
  • [Tennessee] Stephen Bruno (2 for 2) and Bijan Rademacher (1 for 3, walk) also chipped in.
  • [Tennessee] Jeffry Antigua threw about 50 pitches over 3.2 pretty good innings to start Game Two. He struck out 4 and allowed just a run on 2 hits. Stephen Perakslis and Andres Santiago allowed no more scoring through the regulation seven innings, but Zach Cates (who pitched both the 8th and 9th) eventually allowed the go-ahead Blue Wahoos to cross the plate.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jeimer Candelario led the way with 3 for 5 game, including a double. Jacob Rogers and Daniel Lockhart both had 2 hit games.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Shawon Dunston Jr, Lockhart, and Carlos Penalver all had at least one steal in this game. Penalver had two (and now has 4 for the season).
  • [Myrtle Beach] Daury Torrez pitched 5 good innings in this one, allowing a run on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4.
  • [South Bend] Cael Brockmeyer and Jeffrey Baez both finished this game with 3 hits.
  • [South Bend] Chesny Young picked up just one hit, but he did walk 4 times. Gioskar Amaya and Gleyber Torres both walked twice.
  • [South Bend] Interestingly (and unusually), South Bend scored all their runs in this game without the benefit of a single extra base hit. That’s what 14 hits, 9 walks, and 2 Fort Wayne errors will do for a team.
  • [South Bend] Erick Leal struck out 3 and walked 2 over 5 innings, allowing a run on 6 hits. Tyler Ihrig struck out 2 in 2 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Scores From Saturday

Iowa – Saturday was a rain out.
Tennessee – Had it been in the majors, we might be calling it the Almora Game. The Smokies won this one 7-1.
Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans won the opener of the double header 4-1, and then swept the day with an 8-4 win in Game Two.
South Bend – The Cubs let this one slip away in the ninth and lost it 5-4.

    Performances of Note

  • [Tennessee] Albert Almora finished a perfect 5 for 5 with a double. As a result, his small sample size early season line now reads .308/.357/.385.
  • [Tennessee] Elliot Soto, batting just ahead of Almora, finished 3 for 5 and scored twice.
  • [Tennessee] Kyle Schwarber, after a hitless game in which walked 3 more times, now features the unlikely early season line of .250/.500/.563.
  • [Tennessee] Felix Pena struck out 6 in his 6 innings on the mound. He allowed a run on 4 hits and 2 walks.
  • [Tennessee] Fernando Cruz struck out 4 more in his 3 innings of one hit relief.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Duane Underwood had several no-hit innings under his belt before he finally resumed mortality. He finished with 4 strikeouts over 6 innings while allowing a run on 2 hits and a walk. Starling Peralta pitched the seventh.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Dunston tripled, stole a base, and finished 2 for 3 in Game One. Jacob Rogers and Victor Caratini both doubled.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Paul Blackburn was not at his best in Game Two, but he did enough. His final line read 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R (3 ER), 1 BB, 4 K.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Josh Conway gave up nothing over the final 2 innings while striking out one.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Ben Carhart hit his first homer of the season in Game Two, a solo shot, and finished the day with the one hit and 3 runs batted in.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jeimer Candelario doubled twice in the second game and finished 2 for 4.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jacob Hannemann, Mark Zagunis, and Billy McKinney all doubled and finished with 2 hits in the second contest. Zagunis also walked twice, McKinney once.
  • [South Bend] Trey Martin doubled twice and finished 2 for 4 with a stolen base. He is up to 4 steals on the season.
  • [South Bend] Gleyber Torres finished 0 for 2, but he did walk twice.
  • [South Bend] Zach Hedges (5 IP, 2 H, 3 K) and Tommy Thorpe (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K) carried the Cubs through seven innings and had them in position for the win. James Farris, despite striking out 5 over 2 innings, allowed the crucial ninth inning rally.
  • Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – In a rain shortened game, Iowa was shut out for a 4-2 loss.
Tennessee – The Smokiers were rained out.
Myrtle Beach – Myrtle Beach was also rained out.
South Bend – Another ninth inning rally cost the Cubs this game 4-1.

    Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Barret Loux struck out 5 in his 5 inning start while giving up a run on 3 hits and 3 walks. Hunter Cervenka and Armando Rivero both struggled in relief.
  • [Iowa] Rubi Silva doubled and earned an outfield assist at first base. Adron Chambers also doubled.
  • [South Bend] Trevor Clifton cruised through 5 innings with a brilliant one hit, one walk, 7 strikeout performance.
  • [South Bend] With two hits each, Jesse Hodges and Glebyer Torres combined for two thirds of the Cubs total offense.
  • [South Bend] Cael Brockmeyer finished 1 for 2 with a walk.
  • Other News

  • In case you missed it, there was a bit of a write up on Brockmeyer at the tail end of yesterday’s “This Week In The Minors.
  • Also yesterday, the Cubs made some roster shuffles that included sending Matt Szczur back to Iowa.
  • In other roster shuffle news, Starling Peralta is now a Smokey and Jasvir Rakkar is moving up to Myrtle beach. Blake Parker has been added to the 7 day disabled list and both catcher Taylor Teagarden and left reliever Hunter Cervenka have joined Iowa. Meanwhile, Rob Zastryzny is now on the 7 day DL for Tennessee.
