Report: Addison Russell Is Being Called Up Tuesday

Chicago Cubs

It didn’t take long for the Cubs to dip into their prospect pool.

Four nights after calling up Kris Bryant to make his debut Friday against the Padres, the Cubs have reportedly called up shortstop prospect Addison Russell, per CBS’ Jon Heyman.

(UPDATE: Carrie Muskat confirms the news.)

Entering Monday’s game, Russell slashed .300/.376/.519/.895 in 1,080 plate appearances in the minor leagues. In fact, Russell broke up former Cub Scott Baker’s no-hitter on Monday afternoon. Good timing, I suppose.

The corresponding move?

If it turns out that Arismendy Alcantara is sent down, the Cubs will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Russell, who is’s No. 5 prospect, has played seven games at second base for the Iowa Cubs in Triple-A. Cubs second basemen are slashing .146/.222/.146/.369 this season. The .369 OPS is the worst in baseball.
