Normally I would have waited for the Pre-Gamin’ to discuss the lineup, but this seems sufficiently important …
Today, Jorge Soler will be leading off for the Cubs, and Dexter Fowler will bat second. Joe Maddon has unique ways of working with his players, and this sure seems like a solid way of urging Soler to focus on laying off those pitches low and away, which have lead to a 47.5% strikeout rate for Soler since April 21.
You know, those pitches that pitchers have been throwing him constantly:
That’s about a stark as a zone profile gets: low and away, out of the zone, forever and always.
It’s time for Soler to make an adjustment, which is always easier said than done. Perhaps the first step is changing his mindset a little bit, and that could start today with Soler batting lead off.
