How the Cardinals scored their runs today …
It just doesn’t make for a happy day. The fact that John Lackey dominated Cubs hitters didn’t help, either. He deserves the credit he’ll get for this one.
As for Jake Arrieta, he was basically fine today, in terms of what he actually did (he was better than the line indicates). Not much else to say – sometimes you pitch well enough, but some things happen behind you.
The game ended with two Cubs on based and a called third strike on Welington Castillo … almost hilariously far outside. The Cubs weren’t coming back, and I’m not complaining, but it was just a perfect way to end the series. (And, indeed, it was so far outside that it’ll leave some folks wondering – probably incorrectly – whether it was a little bit of umpire payback for Joe Maddon.)
In any case … the series is over. Mercifully. Go beat the Brewers.
