A huge comeback AND a four-game sweep? That’s just awesome.
It was another one-run win for the Cubs today, who didn’t get a great outing from Travis Wood, but the bullpen was nails and the offense kept plugging away.
Jon Niese pounded the zone against the Cubs today, which is partly his game, and partly the way to approach this patient Cubs team. He cruised through the first three innings, then, mowing the Cubs down with minimal effort. The thing about that approach, though, is that if you do it again the second and third times through the order, you’re asking to get blasted as the batters see those pitches in the zone again and again.
That’s what happened, especially in the four-run fifth inning, when the Cubs tied the game after falling behind 5-1. The Cubs added a run in the 7th thanks to some Mets misadventures, and that’s all she wrote. What a week!
