That Kyle Hendricks start was the perfect follow-up to yesterday’s discussion of how Joe Maddon has been approaching his starts (together with Travis Wood and Tsuyoshi Wada). It’s not that Hendricks won’t be permitted to go more than six innings or go through the order a third time – when he’s pitching like he was last night, and is never really in any kind of trouble, he can keep going. It was a fantastic performance all around.
Offensively, the Cubs continue their bizarre stretch of no hits with runners in scoring position (now a week long, and 0 for 27), but fortunately it hasn’t precluded them picking up some wins. Kris Bryant went deep in the 1st, and Addison Russell went deep in the 7th. That was it for Cubs scoring, but it was plenty.
