Cubs Minor League Daily: Best Catch Of The Season?

Chicago Cubs

Ladies and Gentlemen, Jacob Hannemann. This catch came in the 10th inning with the bases loaded. Here it is from multiple angles.

I love the reaction of that guy in the bullpen.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa played two games, but lost them both. The first final was 13-1, and the second was 3-2.
Tennessee – Thanks in part outfield defense that should be immortalized in bardic song, the Smokies won in thirteen innings 3-2.
Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans were rained out.
South Bend – An eighth inning rally fell short as the Cubs lost 4-3.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] The good news from Game One is that Armando Rivero pitched 1.1 hitless innings of relief. He allowed one walk and struck out one.
  • [Iowa] A double from Arismendy Alcantara and a triple from Matt Szczur pretty much complete the Game One highlights.
  • [Iowa] In Game Two the Cubs got 3 good innings from Yoanner Negrin in relief. He struck out 5 and allowed just 2 hits.
  • [Iowa] Chris Valaika doubled and finished the second game with 2 hits.
  • [Tennessee] Albert Almora walked (his 8th), homered (his first), and finished 2 for 5.
  • [Tennessee] Kyle Schwarber also finished with 2 hits.
  • [Tennessee] Willson Contreras, usually a catcher but playing third base in this one, hit his 14th double.
  • [Tennessee] The Cubs needed a lot of scoreless innings from their bullpen to win to this one, and contribution credit goes to: C.J. Edwards (2 IP), P.J. Francescon (1 IP), Gerardo Concepcion (1.1 IP), and Andres Santiago (1.2 IP).
  • [South Bend] Yasiel Balaguert led the Cubs with 3 hits, including his 2nd homer of the year.
  • [South Bend] Andrew Ely (with a double) and Jason Vosler both finished with 2 hits.
  • [South Bend] Trevor Clifton was not locating well as he walked 5 over 4.2 innings and finished having allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. Ryan McNeil struck out a pair in 2 scoreless innings of relief.

Other News

  • Almora had a pretty good catch of his own for the Smokies, one that might be the highlight of the day on any other day. It isn’t the magical diving awesomeness that Hannemann gave us, but it is well worth a watch.
  • Dan Vogelbach left a game a few days ago with an apparent injury, and now it is official.  He is on the DL.
  • That Hannemann catch was so good that after the game his teammates, current and former, took to Twitter to talk about it. I don’t remember too many other plays that got other minor league players talking quite like this.
