Chicago Cubs

It wasn’t a one-run loss, but it sure was a close game.

The Cubs were up 2-1 in the 5th when Kyle Hendricks came so close to getting out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out. Although Hendricks managed to strike out Giancarlo Stanton and pop up Justin Bour, he left a meatball out over the plate for Marcell Ozuna who cleared the bases and gave the Marlins the lead they wouldn’t relinquish (Stanton later added a solo homer because Stanton).

The Cubs had the makings of a rally in the 9th, with a Starlin Castro single, an Addison Russell walk, and then a Chris Coghlan single. Unfortunately Russell took a really inadvisable and unnecessarily aggressive turn at second, and he was out when the throw back into the infield came to second base. Maybe he assumed Castro was going to be sent ahead of him, but with just one out down three, that would have been a really bad send.

If you’re looking for silver linings, Castro played a really nice game in the field, and Hendricks pitched well overall. But the bats just haven’t done enough lately.
