Cubs Minor League Daily: 500 Potential Draftees

2015 mlb draftThere are three ways to monitor the 2015 draft.

In Plan A, you frequently visit this website for all your latest updates and let me and Brett do all the hard work. Plan B has you doing all that work yourself, and Plan C is a little bit of both.

For those of you who fall into Plan B or C , I have a bookmark for you. Baseball America has now released their entire BA 500, their list of the 500 best players in the draft complete with school, position, state, and some videos and scouting reports (if you subscribe), and all of it searchable. You will see many, many references to this resource during the draft coverage here at Bleacher Nation.

In the meantime, you can use this database to answer those burning draft questions that I just know have been keeping you up at night. Now instead of wondering who the second best left handed pitcher from a junior college in this draft is, you can easily find out that it is Mac Marshall.

The players in this data set are ranked, and if the draft plays exactly according to Baseball America’s rankings (it won’t), then the Cubs would draft fast rising Arkansas outfielder Andrew Benintendi in the first round. In the second they’d take high school right handed pitcher Austin Smith, the third would bring them high school shortstop Jonathan India, and high school right hander Ian Kahaloa would arrive in the fourth. I won’t spoil the surprise and let you look the rest.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa is on a roll. They won their fourth straight 9-3.
Tennessee – With this game the Smokies tied Chattanooga in the win column and pulled to within one game overall. Tennessee won it 9-3.
Myrtle Beach – Yesterday’s suspended game ended in the bottom of the eleventh with a 4-3 loss for the Pelicans. The second game was another 4-3 loss.
South Bend – South Bend had the day off.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Donn Roach allowed one run on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 2. His groundout / flyout ratio was ten to one.
  • [Iowa] Javier Baez finished 4 for 5 with home runs number 6 and 7.
  • [Iowa] Arismendy Alcantara walked, homered (his 8th) and finished 3 for 4 with a double and his 7th steal.
  • [Iowa] Batting in between those two was Adron Chambers, who doubled as part of his 4 hit night.
  • [Iowa] Christian Villanueva hit his 5th homer and finished 2 for 5.
  • [Tennessee] Frank Batista, the unlikely ace of the Smokies, allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2 over 5.2 innings. His ERA is now 1.67.
  • [Tennessee] Tayler Scott allowed a run on a hit and struck out 3 as he completed the rest of the game.
  • [Tennessee] Albert Almora doubled and finished 3 for 5 in this one. Willson Contreras also had 3 hits.
  • [Tennessee] Wes Darvill came off the bench to hit his first Double A homer of the year and to finish 3 for 3.
  • [Tennessee] The key to Tennessee’s offense in this one? 5 walks, 2 strikeouts.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jen-Ho Tseng was completely out pitched by super prospect Lucas Giolito in the first game, but somehow, despite allowing 10 hits and a walk over 5 innings, he limited the damage to just 2 runs.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Juan Paniagua struck out 4 and allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings of relief in the first game.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis, Pin-Chieh Chen, and Chesny Young all finished with 2 hits in the first contest. Chen and Young each stole their 4th base as a Pelican. Carlos Penalver finished 1 for 5 and stole his 7th base.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jonathan Martinez put together a strong start in Game Two. He struck out 6 over 5 innings while allowing a run on 5 hits.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jeimer Candelario and Carlos Penalver both finished 2 for 3 with a double in the second game. Jacob Rogers and Victor Caratini also had 2 hits.
  • Other News

  • The Southern League battle for first place between Chattanooga (featuring Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano) and Tennessee continues this morning in Chattnooga. On Thursday and Friday, though, the games shift to the home stadium of the Smokies. That means we will get to watch on MiLB.TV as this battle of prospect laden heavyweights sets the stage for the final weeks of the first half of the season.

Why Craig Counsell Wanted Miles Mastrobuoni on the Cubs’ Bench

I don't know why Miles Mastrobuoni bugs some folks, but it's probably heavily-weighted toward his small-sample, bad-batted-ball-luck start last year, and that time he didn't dive while playing in right field. It can be hard to shake initial impressions, I...

Kinda Sounds Like Craig Counsell May Have a Set Top Three in the Batting Order

New Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell has said, generally, his batting order philosophy is the very simplistic (and very correct): just get your best hitters the most at bats. Sure, there's some play in that to set up good match-ups,...
