At long last, draft day. Assuming the Cubs are able to sign their draftees, the farm system is about to get even deeper.
Draft coverage is going to be a pretty much perpetual thing on Bleacher Nation over the next three days, so be sure to check back frequently. If you need the lowdown on how the draft works, how and when to follow it, etc., check Brett’s two-part primer here and here.
[Tennessee] On the mound, Ivan Pineyro surrendered 4 runs on 7 hits over 6 innings while striking out 6.
[Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis homered in Game One, his 2nd for the Pelicans. Other than that, the only extra base hit in that game was a double by Jeimer Candelario.
[Myrtle Beach] Paul Blackburn allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in Game Two, walking 2 and striking out 2. Michael Heesch finished the game without giving up a thing.
[Myrtle Beach] Pin-Chieh Chen and Chesny Young each finished with 2 hits in the second contest. One of Chen’s hits went for a double, and he also stole his 6th base at this level.
[Myrtle Beach] Carlos Penalver also doubled, and drove in 3 of the Pelican’s 5 runs in the process.
[Myrtle Beach] Zagunis reached twice on 2 walks, and stole his 6th base of the year in the second contest.
[South Bend] Jake Stinnett struck out 5 and walked 3 while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits over 5.1 innings.
[South Bend] Watchers for multi-inning relief outings will find two in this game. Daniel Lewis walked 2 in 1.2 hitless frames, and Jordan Minch allowed a run on 3 hits while striking out 2 in 2 innings of work.
Iowa – A late rally ended too early as the Cubs lost 7-2. Tennessee – The Smokies took an early lead, but it did not last. They lost 4-3. Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans were swept in this doubleheader, dropping the first one 1-0 and the second 4-2. South Bend – A good pitching performance turned into a 2-1 Cubs win.
Performances of Note
[Iowa] Javier Baez homered for the 8th time as he finished the game 2 for 4.
[Iowa] Yoervis Medina struck out 2 in 2 innings of hitless relief. It was one of his cleanest outings as a Cub so far.
[Tennessee] Corey Black walked 2 and allowed a hit in 2 innings of relief while striking out a pair.
[Tennessee] Billy McKinney doubled and finished with 2 hits. Ryan Dent also doubled.
[Tennessee] Elliot Soto and Willson Contreras both finished with 2 hits.
[Myrtle Beach] Victor Caratini had the only multi-hit effort in the first game, finishing 2 for 3. He and Daniel Lockhart doubled for the only two extra base hits.
[Myrtle Beach] Tyler Skulina struck out 8 and allowed just one run on 3 hits in his 6 innings of work.
[Myrtle Beach] The Pelicans had no extra base hits in the second game. The brightest offensive highlight was the 7th steal by Zagunis.
[South Bend] Jeremy Null struck out 4 and allowed just one run on 5 hits over 6 innings. He walked no one.
[South Bend] Cael Brockmeyer homered for the 4th time. Jason Vosler doubled and finished with 2 hits.
[Iowa] Donn Roach struck out 5 over 6 innings, giving up a run on 6 hits in the process.
[Iowa] Carl Edwards, Jr. struck out 2 in his one inning of relief.
[Iowa] Javier Baez and Arismendy Alcantara both singled in this game, and both stole a base. For Baez it was his 7th (and it was really costly), and for Alcantara it was number 11.
[Iowa] Taylor Teagarden is not known for his bat, but homered (his 3rd) and finished 3 for 4 in this contest.
[Tennessee] Frank Batista struck out 2 and scattered 6 hits over his 7 scoreless innings. Tayler Scott then pitched three scoreless before allowing the winning tally in the eleventh. He finished with that run on 3 hits and 2 walks to go with his 2 strikeouts.
[Tennessee] The Smokies got a double from Jacob Hannemann, but that was their only extra base hit.
[Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis homered (his 3rd), doubled, and finished 2 for 4.
[Myrtle Beach] Jen-Ho Tseng allowed just one run on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 2 in his 4.1 inning start. Michael Heesch (2 IP) and James Pugliese (2.2 IP) each struck out 2 in relief.
[South Bend] David Garner struck out 5 in his 2 innings of relief, but he also allowed a run on 3 hits.
[South Bend] Jason Vosler doubled for the Cubs’ loan extra base hit.
Other News
Javier Baez spent the weekend transitioning to third base, but yesterday any plans in that direction went on hold when Baez was diagnosed with a broken finger. His return to the majors is going to have to wait a little longer.
My favorite play in baseball, and one of the rarest, is the straight steal of home. Unfortunately, even when a steal of home appears in the box score, it often is not a straight steal. That was the case for Zagunis on Friday. He was credited with a steal of home, but it looked more like he advanced on a wild throw to second when Chen attempted a theft from first. If you are a subscriber to MiLB.tv, you can tune into the replay and make up your own mind. The steal occurred at roughly the 48:00 mark, but I suggest starting your viewing at 46:00 to get the entire at bat.
