Whatever your position on whether Starlin Castro deserves the ire he gets, or whether he’s still a productive member of the Cubs, I’m not sure you can deny that these things really do seem to happen to him more frequently than most players.
In the first inning of last night’s game, Castro booted a groundball that likely would have become a double play. Physical errors happen (again, they seem to happen more frequently to Castro this year than typical), so I wouldn’t really get too much into that. But then, rather than returning the ball expeditiously to Kyle Hendricks, Castro hung his head, and Eddie Rosario took off from third and scored.
You can watch the play here, if you didn’t see it. It was not good.
Castro waited for the media after the game, rather than ducking out and avoiding the discomfort. You can read his comments here and here, among other places, and it’s what you’d expect – he apologized to teammates, it was a bad mistake, he can’t let that happen, etc.
I do appreciate that Castro always owns up to these things, and faces down the questions. I just wish there were less frequently occasions for him to do it.
