Jason Hammel was largely excellent today, allowing only two runs (the second of which was a solo shot by former Cubs farmhand Justin Bour). That’s all you can ask of your starting pitcher, but, outside of yesterday, the Cubs’ offense simply can’t win lately when the other team scores multiple runs.
That’s sad. I’m not sure I’d call that a brutally bad loss, but it sure as heck wasn’t a good one, either.
I still think the offense will come out of this funk eventually – everyone is slumping at the same time, it seems – but, until the bats come around, the Cubs will lose some games like this to teams they really should be (and need to be) beating.
