Cubs Minor League Daily: Roach Offers a Beeler Tea Leaf

dallas beeler cubs featureYou’re stuck with me pinch-hitting mini versions of the Daily for a couple days more …

The Iowa Cubs were shut out once again by New Orleans.

  • The most notable thing from this game was the starter: Donn Roach. That means Roach won’t be available to start for the Cubs’ doubleheader on Tuesday, and also means that Dallas Beeler should be available as I discussed yesterday.
  • The Tennessee Smokies lost 9-4 to Birmingham.

  • Catcher Cael Brockmeyer celebrated his promotion to Tennessee with a homer.
  • Jacob Hannemann continued a nice hot stretch with a couple hits, including a triple. Given his speed and obvious defensive ability in the outfield, he’s not going to have to hit that much to have value on a big league bench (at a minimum). But he’s going to have to hit a little bit more than he has so far.
  • Ivan Pineyro must’ve read what I wrote yesterday about him being a tough call in the Rule 5 Draft, and then laid an egg.
  • The Myrtle Beach Pelicans won huge again, 12-0 over Carolina.

  • It was another big offensive game for most of the Pelicans, with Victor Caratini launching the only homer.
  • Jeimer Candelario had another couple hits, including a double, and a walk.
  • Daury Torrez was nearly perfect in a rain-shortened shutout, striking out six over seven innings, walking none and giving up only three hits. He’s given up just two earned runs over his last 19 innings.
  • The South Bend Cubs lost 9-4 to Bowling Green.

  • Jason Vosler homered and doubled in this one, increasing his season line to .263/.314/.368. No, that’s not earth-shattering, but he’s a 21-year-old versatile infielder who can play shortstop.
  • Daniel Lewis threw 2.1 innings of hitless, walkless, scoreless relief, which qualifies as the pitching highlight from the game.
  • The Eugene Emeralds won 6-0 over Vancouver.

  • Donnie Dewees had another couple hits, including a double, as well as a walk. Although you can’t expect dominance from any player at any level, it is fair to expect Dewees – a polished, accomplished college hitter – to acquit himself quite well in the Northwest League. So far, so good.
  • Ryan Kellogg made his second appearance post-draft, throwing a couple scoreless innings. The Cubs took a few pitchers like Kellogg in this draft – previously highly-touted pitching prospects who had a down year or two in college and saw their stocks fall. Reclaim even just one of those guys, and it’s a home run.
  • The best pitcher of the night was Adbert Alzolay, who threw four hitless and scoreless with four strikeouts and just one walk. I’ll admit I don’t know Alzolay, 20, but it looks like he’s always had huge strikeout totals as he worked his way up from the Venezuelan Summer League to the Arizona Rookie League to Boise and Eugene. Don’t scout the stat line and all that, but I’m intrigued.
  • The Arizona Cubs had their game postponed.
