Goodbye Gonzalez Germen, Claimed on Waivers by Rockies

Chicago Cubs

gonzalez germen metsGonzalez Germen’s well-travelled year continues, as he was last week designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs, and now has been claimed off of waivers by the Rockies.

Germen, 27, came to the Cubs in the offseason after a series of transactions that saw him a member of the Mets, Yankees, and Rangers in the span of a couple months. Michael profiled Germen here, and it wasn’t hard to see why so many teams were trying so hard to get and stash him. Germen has clear upside and one dominant pitch (his changeup), but he’s not quite effective enough for teams to want in their big league bullpen right now. But lots of teams would love to have him at AAA.

That’s where he heads now for the Rockies, and the Cubs’ bullpen depth takes a tiny hit. Then again, with the Cubs adding Ben Rowen on a minor league deal, with Rafael Soriano making his way up the ladder, and with eight guys already in the big league pen, the Cubs’ bullpen depth isn’t looking too bad.

For now.

In his time in the Cubs’ organization, Germen made six not-terrible appearances at the big league level, but was only so-so at Iowa.
