  • With yesterday’s doubleheader sweep – the Cubs swept the Cardinals in a doubleheader by beating the Cardinals twice in a single day because the Cubs were better in those two games did you know – the Cubs are now a season-high nine games over .500, tying the mark they set after the second game of their four-game set against the Dodgers a couple weeks ago. From there, the Cubs lost five in a row to the Dodgers and Cardinals, and followed that by winning seven of nine. When the pitching is going as well as it has been, and the offense is going as slumpy as it has been, I suppose those kinds of wild ups and downs will happen.
  • In any case, the Cubs now have the fifth best record in baseball, and third best in the NL. But, you know, also the third best in the NL Central.
  • Matt Trueblood takes a deep look at Starlin Castro’s swing, from a mechanical perspective, and writes about a small change Castro has made since approximately June 19 – he straightens a bit before he starts his swing, which gives him better balance and produces more contact. There are still other issues at play, but, if Trueblood is right, then Castro’s contact rate will soar. Which is not nothing.
  • A great read from Sahadev Sharma looking at some of the offensive issues facing Miguel Montero, Dexter Fowler, Addison Russell and Starlin Castro.
  • If you missed it early this morning, there’s video and discussion on the Addison Russell hit down the line in last night’s game – it was a hit.
  • Exceptionally well-crafted tweet:
